French Senate Delegation to Visit Taiwan

At the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Senator Monique Papon, Chairwoman of the French Senate-Taiwan Friendship Group; Senator Catherine Tasca, Vice-President of the French Senate; Senator Laurent Beteille, Senator Catherine Procaccia and Senator Sylvie Goy-Chavent are to visit Taiwan from July 18 to 23, 2010.
During their stay, Senator Papon and delegates will meet with President Ma Ying-jeou, Vice President of the Legislative Yuan Tseng Yung-chuan, Mayor of Taipei Hau Lung-bin, Minister of Council of Cultural Affairs Sheng Chih-jen, Minister of the Mainland Affairs Council Lai Shin-yuan, and President of the “White Egret” Foundation Chen Yu-hsiu. Dr. Shen Lyushun, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, will host a welcoming luncheon in their honor. The delegates will also call at the Government Information Office and visit the National Palace Museum, Taipei 101, World Trade Center, National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, among other cultural and economic establishments.
Chairwoman Papon, an outstanding Senator with vast experience in the political arena, belongs to the ruling coalition of the Union for a Popular Movement (Union pour un Movement Populaire, UMP) in France. A longstanding friend of Taiwan, Senator Papon has spared no effort in supporting Taiwan’s broader participation in international organizations. The delegates have expressed interests in understanding the most recent policies and the current situation across the Taiwan Strait. This trip, the fourth to Taiwan for Senator Papon and first for other members, will provide the delegation with the opportunity to better apprehend the latest developments and policies of the Taiwanese government.(E)
