At the invitation of the government of the Republic of China (ROC), Honorable Elizabeth Renner, Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of The Gambia, accompanied by two members of the Assembly, Hon. During their stay, Speaker Renner and members of her delegation will have an audience with President Ma Ying-jeou, call on President of the Legislative Yuan Wang Jin-pyng, President of the Control Yuan Wang Chien-shien, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Timothy Yang. President Wang of the Legislative Yuan and Mr. Ssu-Tsun Shen, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, will host respectively welcoming luncheon and dinner. The delegates will also visit Government Information Office to record a television congratulatory message for the centenary of the Republic of China. Speaker Renner and delegates will also visit Fu Jen Catholic University, the site of 2010 Taipei International Flora Expo, Museum of World Religions, National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, among other cultural and economic establishments.

This marks Speaker Renner’s second visit to Taiwan. The main purposes of her trip are to attend the ROC’s National Day celebrations and to understand the recent political, economic and social developments in Taiwan. It is firmly believed that the visit of Speaker Renner will further enhance the bilateral cooperation and cordial relations between the ROC and the Gambia.

Since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1995 between the Republic of China and the Republic of The Gambia, bilateral relations have been continuously strengthened. Both countries have successfully undertaken various cooperation projects in the areas of infrastructure construction, medicine and public health, as well as agriculture. The Gambia has strongly supported Taiwan in its bid to participate in the United Nations, the World Health Assembly, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).(E)
