Professor Vytautas Landsbergis, former Head of State of Lithuania and current Member of the European Parliament, and Mrs. Landsbergiene to visit Taiwan

At the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Professor Vytautas Landsbergis, former Head of State of Lithuania and current Member of the European Parliament, and Mrs. Landsbergiene will visit Taiwan for the first time, from April 23 to April 28, 2011.

Professor Landsbergis and Mrs. Landsbergiene will have an audience with President Ma Ying-jeou, call on President of the Legislative Yuan Wang Jin-pyng, Minister of the Mainland Affairs Council Lai Shin-yuan and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Ssu-Tsun Shen. President Wang Jin-pyng and Vice Minister Ssu-Tsun Shen will hold banquets in their honor respectively. In addition, Professor Vytautas will meet with representatives from the Kuomintang party, the Democratic Progressive Party and the European Economic and Trade Office. The delegation will also visit Kinmen, the National Palace Museum and Taipei 101, among other places. 

Professor Landsbergis was Lithuania’s first Head of State in the post-communist era, after the breakup of the Soviet Union. Professor Landsbergis and former President of the Czech Republic, Vaclav Havel, were the initiators and signatories of the Prague Declaration on European Conscience and Communism, making significant contributions to the democratization of Central and Eastern Europe.

Professor Landsbergis is currently the only member of the European Parliament to have served as a Head of State and is widely respected among all parliamentary groups. (E)
