The Republic of South Sudan officially declared independence today, July 9, 2011, earning support by most members of the United Nations and the international community. As a proponent of democracy and freedom, the Republic of China (Taiwan) recognizes the Republic of South Sudan and extends its sincere congratulations and best wishes for the latter’s bright and prosperous future. Taiwan also applauds the Republic of Sudan for respecting the pursuit of independence and self-determination by the people of the southern Sudan.
Self-determination is a fundamental right recognized by the United Nations, as the fate of a country should be decided by its people. Considering the obstacles faced by the people of South Sudan in recent years, their peaceful realization of independence via referendum on January 9, 2011 is a remarkable feat.(E)
