The government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) expresses its sincere appreciation to German parliamentarians who in October voiced their support of Taiwan’s participation in the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Parliamentarian Klaus-Peter Willsch, Chair of the Germany-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group, sent a letter and an attached joint letter signed by 97 German parliamentarians from several political parties to the Secretary General of ICAO expressing support for Taiwan’s participation in the world aviation body.
In their letter, the German parliamentarians came out strongly for Taiwan’s participation in ICAO, stressing that only by allowing Taiwan to acquire vital aviation safety information real-time would the safety of international passengers be ensured. Parliamentarian Mark Hauptmann, a member of the Germany-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group, separately issued a press release October 10 indicating that political issues should not be allowed to endanger the safety of international aviation.
In recent years, the Germany-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group has called annually on parliamentary colleagues to signal support for Taiwan’s participation in ICAO. MOFA will continue to seek participation in specialized agencies of the UN, such as ICAO, and other related international organizations via appropriate means.
