Vice Minister Ssu-tsun Shen Met with MECO Chairman Amadeo R. Perez and Resident Representative Antonio Basilio from the Philippines to Discuss the Issue of the South China Sea

Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Ssu-tsun Shen met with Chairman Amadeo R. Perez and Resident Representative Antonio Basilio from the Manila Economic and Cultural Office at 1:45 PM on April 18, 2011. Vice Minister Shen reiterated the position of the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) on the issue of the South China Sea, and solemnly protested actions that violate the ROC’s sovereignty.

During the meeting, Vice Minister Shen also provided Chairman Perez and Representative Basilio with documents that assert the ROC’s sovereignty over the Nansha Islands (Spratly Islands), the Shisha Islands (Paracel Islands), the Chungsha Islands (Macclesfield Bank) and the Tungsha Islands (Pratas Islands), as well as their surrounding waters, sea beds and subsoil. The Philippines was further urged to refrain from adopting unilateral measures that threaten regional peace and stability. Vice Minister Shen also reiterated the need to uphold the basic principle of “safeguarding sovereignty, shelving disputes, peace and reciprocity, and joint exploration.” He stressed that Taiwan seeks to reach peaceful resolutions to disputes with other countries through consultation and dialogue. Chairman Perez and Representative Basilio expressed that they would deliver the aforementioned documents and convey Taiwan’s position to the Philippine government.(E)
