No. 148
May 13, 2011

At the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan), a delegation from the Luxembourg-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group will visit Taiwan from May 15 to May 20, 2011. The delegation consists of five members of the Luxembourg Parliament – Mr. Xavier Bettel, Mrs Claudia Dall’Agnol, Mr. Fernand Diederich, Mr. Gast Giberyen, Mr. Ben Scheuer – and Mayor of Walferdange, Mrs Joelle Elvinger.

This is the first time a delegation from the Luxembourg-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group has visited Taiwan since it was established in January 2011, and only Mr. Bettel has been to Taiwan before. The Luxembourg-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group already has over 20 members, or one third of the 60 members of Luxembourg’s unicameral parliament.

The delegation will call on President of the Legislative Yuan Wang Jin-pyng, Secretary General of the National Security Council Dr. Hu Wei-jen and Minister of the Mainland Affairs Council Lai Shin-yuan. Mr. Wang Jin-pyng and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Lyushun Shen will host banquets respectively in their honor. They will also call at the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Ministry of Finance, the Kuomintang Party and the Democratic Progressive Party. The delegation will also visit Tainan Science Park, the Kaohsiung Customs Office, the National Palace Museum, Taipei 101, and a number of cultural sites in Tainan.

This trip aims to give the delegation a better understanding of Taiwan’s most recent political and economic developments. (E)
