At the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Father Bernardo Cervellera, Director of the Asia News Agency, will visit Taiwan from November 29 to December 4, 2011.

Father Cervellera will have an audience with President Ma Ying-jeou, call at the Ministry of Education and witness the signing of the Agreement Between the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China and the Congregation for Catholic Education of the Holy See on Collaboration in the Field of Higher Education and on the Recognition of Studies, Qualifications, Diplomas and Degrees. He will also call on Dr. Jiang Yi-huah, Minister of the Interior, call at the Government Information Office and the Straits Exchange Foundation, and attend a dinner hosted by Dr. Lyushun Shen, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs. 

Father Cervellera will also attend the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the re-establishment of Fu-Jen Catholic University in Taiwan, as well as a ground-breaking ceremony for a hospital the university’s College of Medicine is to build. In addition, he will visit the National Palace Museum and the Tzu-Chi Culture and Communication Foundation. He will also head south to Kaohsiung, where he will visit Love River and Mount of Beatitude.

Father Cervellera studied Chinese in Taiwan from 1991 to 1992. Following his last visit in 1993, he hopes to call on old friends and gain a better understanding of the Catholic Church’s development in Taiwan, as well as cross-strait relations. (E)
